Pronounced: Scù-si (Dizionario Italiano Garzanti) or Scu-sea (Roberto's Americanized version of the word).
Meaning: Excuse me. Scusi signora (Excuse me ma'am). Scusi is the formal way of saying sorry when you bump into someone, interrupt people in conversation, or blunder your way through the Italian language. Scusa, as in Scusa ragazzi is an informal way of saying the same thing, but for most all occasions you should use the word scusi. Scusi is a word I've used quite often as I made gaffe after gaffe speaking the language - there have been times when I prayed I hadn't inadvertently told someone that their mother is ugly or something equally embarrassing. Scusi, tutti. Note: I show the pronunciation of each Word of the Day as found in Dizionario Italiano Garzanti, followed by Roberto's (Americanized) pronunciation of each daily word.
