Pronounced: Per-mès-so (Dizionario Italiano Garzanti) Pair-mays-so. (Roberto's Americanized version of the word).
Meaning: Literally, it means permit; it is commonly used to ask permission, as in May I? Permesso signore? (May I, sir?). Permesso is a word Italians use just before entering another's home. Essentially, they are asking permission to enter. And, they don't enter the home until the person answering the door says si or certo (certainly) or something similar. So, if you are invited into an Italian's home - and I hope you will be - ask Permesso? when the person opens the door and don't enter until you are granted permesso.
