We tried to find Bob and Donald’s apartment in Lucca – it turned out to be really easy. We knew we were close but even in a small town like Lucca, close can be far away. A simple inquiry at the café in Piazza Carmine and heads nod. Of course they know the eccentric American Roberto and we were escorted to the very door of his place! Walking through Lucca with Bob is like being shown around a person’s home. His knowledge is profound, useful and entertaining, as is the man. He not only can tell the story about the significance of a place or the quality of the food, but knows an amusing tale about the owner’s son-in-law and he seems to know everyone and everyone knows Roberto, as he is called in this jewel of a city. Seeing Lucca through the eyes of Bob is as far from the umbrella-led bus tours that traipse through the town as one could
Imagine. It has brought us back for many years.
